Open science principles at the University of Jyväskylä

The University of Jyväskylä promotes responsible and open science and research. The aim is to open the research results, research materials and methods used in the research. The University of Jyväskylä complies with the national and international principles and requirements of open science and research, such as the National Declaration on Open Science and its guidelines and recommendations.

Our values of openness, trust, quality and integrity are the foundation of the culture of our university community. Transparency is a key part of our university's strategy.

The aim of the principles of open science at the University of Jyväskylä is to increase the visibility and impact of science and research. Openness increases opportunities for growing scientific communication between researchers as well as for discussion with citizens. In addition, the transparency of the research increases its reliability and reproducibility.

By open research, we mean opening research processes and research results, if this is ethically or legally possible. Even in cases where, for the above reasons, it is not possible to open for example research data, we document and describe the data so that their metadata can be properly found in the university's research information system and data archive.

We maintain and promote the development of open science skills in students and researchers at all stages of their studies and research careers.

We are ambitiously developing new, user-friendly digital tools and workflows and introducing new technologies in line with our digital development programme. Our goal is create systems that facilitate the work of researchers and enable the smooth and high-quality documentation, storage and, where possible, opening of different types of research output.

Open research outputs are part of academic merit. The evaluation will be developed in accordance with the national recommendation for responsible researcher evaluation. The goal is a responsibly implemented evaluation process from start to finish. The University of Jyväskylä has signed the international DORA declaration.

The University

  • requires that research data be deposited and, whenever possible, published on an open access basis so that they will be freely searchable and usable.
  • encourages researchers to explain the methods used in the research.
  • offers similar basic services to all research projects financed by supplementary funding for managing their materials, for the work of the research groups, and for publishing the research results on an open access basis.
