Discounts on open access publishing fees

JYU's open access agreements with publishers

Authors of the University of Jyväskylä can take advantage of the open access agreements negotiated with academic publishers listed below. The agreements only cover open access fees (article processing charges, APCs) but not additional costs such as color or page charges.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)

FinELib’s agreement with ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) allows JYU authors to publish Open Access in ACM’s titles (journals, magazines, conference proceedings) at no additional charge. The costs of OA publishing are covered by the agreement.

BioMed Central, SpringerOpen (open access journals)

The Open Science Centre will cover 50% of the article processing charges of BioMed Central and SpringerOpen journals. The author/department is responsible for the other 50%. In addition, a discount of 5% is granted from the original charge.

Once your article is approved for publication, please agree with the publisher on the invoicing address for 50% of the discounted APC (University of Jyväskylä’s invoicing address and VAT number).

Cogitatio Press

JYU has joined Cogitatio Press's Membership Program and covers the article processing charges (APC) on behalf of corresponding authors of JYU.

The Company of Biologists

Corresponding authors at the University of Jyväskylä can publish Open Access research articles in The Company of Biologists’ hybrid journals and fully Open Access journals during the agreement period 2024–2026. The Five-journal Read & Publish package includes the following journals: Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology, Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open.

Elsevier: Cell Press Journals

Under FinELib consortium’s agreement with Elsevier, corresponding authors can publish their articles open access without article processing charge (APC) in Cell Press hybrid journals eligible for the agreement. There is a limited number of free open access articles available during the agreement period 2022–2024.

Elsevier: SD Freedom Journals

Under the FinELib consortium’s agreement with Elsevier, corresponding authors affiliated with JYU can publish their articles open access during the agreement period 1.1.2024–31.12.2025

  • Without an article processing charge in Elsevier's hybrid journals and journals that have flipped from hybrid to gold open access.
  • With 15% discount on the journal’s APC in Elsevier's gold open access journals.

The hybrid title Journal of Great Lakes Research subscribed to by the Open Science Centre is also included in the agreement.

Emerald

FinELib consortium’s agreement with Emerald offers authors an opportunity to publish their articles under the CC BY -license with a free open access voucher during the agreement term 1.1.–31.12.2024.

IEEE

FinELib consortium’s agreement with IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) offers JYU authors an opportunity to publish their articles open access during the agreement term 2024–2025 without article processing charges (APC) in IEEE's hybrid and full OA journals. However, the author may be responsible for color, page or reprint charges.

There is a limited number of open access articles for the agreement term.

Nature Research

Open Library of Humanities

Open Library of Humanities is a not-for-profit diamond open access publisher funded by membership fees from subscribing libraries. University of Jyväskylä is one of OLH’s supporters.

All authors regardless of their institutional affiliation can publish open access in OLH journals at no cost to themselves.

Oxford University Press (OUP)

FinELib’s agreement with OUP allows authors from JYU to publish open access in OUP’s hybrid journals at no additional charge. The costs of OA publishing are covered by the agreement and paid for from library budgets.

For articles in OUP's fully OA journals, a 15 % discount on the normal APC (Article Processing Charge) applies.

Royal Society of Chemistry

FinELib consortium’s agreement with Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) allows researchers to publish their articles open access at no additional charge in RCS’s Full OA and hybrid journals during the agreement term 2024–2025. Regarding Full OA journals, the agreement currently covers only the year 2024.

SAGE

Researchers of JYU can publish their articles open access with CC BY licence during the agreement period 1.1.2023–31.12.2024

  • free of charge in the SAGE hybrid journals included in the agreement or
  • with 20% discount of the journal’s APC (article processing charge) in the SAGE Gold Open Access journals included in the agreement.

Science Advances journal (AAAS)

Researchers of JYU get a 15 % discount when publishing in Science Advances, journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). All articles in Science Advances are immediately open access. Information about Science Advances APC fees can be found on Science Advances website.

SCOAP3

SCOAP3 is a partnership of over three thousand libraries, key funding agencies and research centers. Open Science Centre is one of the partners. Springer Compact

FinELib consortium’s agreement with Springer Nature includes open access publishing in Springer’s hybrid titles in the Compact collection (see journals list on FinELib's website) during the agreement term 1.1.2021–31.12.2023. The corresponding author does not need to pay an APC (article processing charge). The charges are covered by the agreement.

NB. JYU's agreement expired at the end of the year 2023. An agreement for 2024-2025 is being finalized, but publishing will continue without interruption in 2024.

Taylor & Francis

2023-2024 FinELib agreement with Taylor & Francis includes open publishing in almost 2000 journals published by Taylor & Francis / Routledge. This includes Open Select (hybrid) journals in both Social Sciences & Humanities and Science & Technology fields.

Agreement doesn't include T&F journals in Medical fields, or most of the Full Open Access journals. Any journals which convert from Open Select journals to Full Open Access journals will stay included in the FinELib agreement until the end of 2024.

Wiley

FinELib consortium’s agreement with Wiley enables the researchers of JYU to publish their articles open access in Wiley’s Full OA and hybrid journals during the agreement term 2023–2024.

Open access payments of research funded by Research Council of Finland or European Union

Publications of the research funded by the Research Council of Finland, the European Union or other organisations endorsing Plan S must be made immediately available open access.

Publishing fees paid by Open Science Centre

Open Science Centre pays the open access publishing fees for researchers who fall into either of the following categories: 

  1. Those funded by organisations endorsing Plan S (e.g. Research Council of Finland, EU) and whose funding period has started on or after September 1, 2021.
    • Please ensure that the publication channel you have chosen meets the criteria of your funder. You can use the Journal Checker Tool to see if your preferred journal is compliant with the funder's OA policy.
  2. Those granted funding following the full cost model and whose funding period has started on or after September 1, 2021.
    • The University of Jyväskylä applies the full cost model, for example, to grants from the Research Council of Finland and to the majority of Business Finland grants.
    • If you are not sure whether your project follows the full cost model, please contact the Research and Innovation Services or the project controller in charge of your project.

The corresponding author affiliated to the University of Jyväskylä should contact Open Science Centre (openpublishing@jyu.fi) before submitting their manuscript to a publisher.

JYU supporting open science

University of Jyväskylä participates in the financing of organizations developing open science infrastructures through various memberships.

arXiv

arXiv is a curated open platform and open access archive maintained by Cornell University that hosts scholarly articles in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. University of Jyväskylä has pledged to fund arXiv.

Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB)

Directory of Open Access Books is a discovery service for peer-reviewed open access books and an open infrastructure committed to open science. University of Jyväskylä is one of the supporters of DOAB.

Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

DOAJ is a directory of open, peer-reviewed scientific journals. Most of DOAJ’s funding comes from academic organizations, including JYU.

DSpace

DSpace is one of the most widely adopted open-source repository software in the world for managing research and scholarly materials across all disciplines, and cultural heritage materials of all types, with a focus on open access, preservation, and storage. University of Jyväskylä has committed to fund DSpace.

Open Book Publishers

Open Book Publishers is an independent open access academic press that publishes peer-reviewed monographs. OBP does not charge authors a fee to publish open access. All OBP's books are freely available for online reading. Since the University of Jyväskylä is a supporting member, the students and staff of JYU are also able to download OBP's books for free.

Public Knowledge Project (PKP)

Public Knowledge Project is a multi-university initiative developing free open source software and conducting research to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing. JYU is one of PKP’s supporters.

SCOAP3 for Books

SCOAP3 for Books program is part of the SCOAP3 project and will convert key textbooks and monographs in particle physics and neighboring fields to open access. JYU has supported the initiative with a financial contribution.

Sherpa Romeo

Sherpa Romeo is an online resource that aggregates and analyses publisher open access policies from around the world and provides summaries of publisher copyright and open access archiving policies on a journal-by-journal basis. JYU is one of Sherpa Romeo financiers.

SPARC Europe

SPARC Europe (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) promotes and works for Open Science and Scholarship in Europe. SPARC Europe consistently initiates, facilitates, and supports the implementation of the long-term objective of opening access to European research for all. University of Jyväskylä is a SPARC Europe supporter.
