Open access publishing for monographs

There are also options for the open access publishing of monographs.

Several international publishers (e.g. Springer, Palgrave, Cambridge, de Gryuter) have published monographs using the principles of gold open access. In such a case, the publisher is paid a book processing charge. The charges for monographs are considerably higher than for open access articles and vary from 5,000 to 10,000 euro depending on the publisher. Publishers specialised in open access books (e.g. Ubiquity Press) may have slightly lower book processing charges. The charge often depends on the size of the monograph. It is also possible to apply for funding for the open access publication of monographs from research financers.

As for open access monographs, the business models of publishers are still forming their shape. Some current projects are based on other type of funding than on publication fees collected from authors. This kind of projects include, for example, Knowledge Unlatched (financed by a library consortium) and unglue.it (crowdfunding).

In most universities, the majority of publications is published openly online. In Finland, especially Tampere University Press (TUP) and Helsinki University Press have been profiled as an open access publishing channel. The University of Jyväskylä also aims at open access publication of its books (both compilations and monographs) online. From domestic commercial science publishers, the Finnish Literature Society has a project to promote open access publishing.
