Open access agreements
Authors of the University of Jyväskylä can take advantage of open access agreements negotiated with academic publishers listed below.
American Chemical Society
FinELib consortium’s agreement with ACS offers authors an opportunity to publish their articles open access during the agreement term 2021–2023 without article processing charges (APC). There is a limited amount of free open access articles but they are estimated to cover publications for the contract period.
You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:
- You are the corresponding author of the article who is to communicate with ACS through the peer review process.
- You are a researcher or student in JYU.
- Your article has been accepted for publication in one of the ACS’s Hybrid Journals or Full OA Journals.
- See the list of eligible journals on FinELib's website.
- NB. Alterations to the lists are possible during the agreement period.
- Your article has been peer-reviewed (e-book articles are excluded).
- Your article has been accepted during 1.1.2021–31.12.2023.
When submitting your manuscript in ACS’s Paragon Plus submission system, ACS recommends you to utilize an email address that is directly associated to your respective institutions, for enhancing ease of verification of qualification as a qualifying author.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
FinELib’s agreement with ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) allows JYU authors to publish Open Access in ACM’s titles (journals, magazines, conference proceedings) at no additional charge. The costs of OA publishing are covered by the agreement.
You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:
- Your article has been accepted for publishing in one of the ACM titles covered by the agreement.
- See the list of eligible journals on FinELib's website.
- Your article has been accepted for publishing during 1.7.2022–31.12.2024.
- You are the corresponding author of the article.
- You have used your JYU email address when submitting the article.
Once your paper has been accepted for publication (and you have you used your organisational email address), you will receive an email containing instructions to Open Access publishing.
To make your article eligible for the agreement, choose
- Institutionally Paid Open Access and
- CC license / Allow remixing (CC BY 4.0 license)
in the publishing process.

BioMed Central, SpringerOpen (open access journals)
Open Science Centre will pay 50% of the article processing charges (publication fees) of BioMed Central and SpringerOpen. The author/department is responsible for the other 50%. In addition, a discount of 5% is granted from the original charge.
When your article is approved for publication, the publisher will take care of the proceeding of the publishing process. A discount of 5% is first deducted from the original article processing charge. Then the rest of the sum is split so that 50% is charged from an account maintained by Open Science Centre and 50% from the researcher or the unit. The corresponding author may agree on the invoicing address with the publisher.

Cogitatio Press
JYU has joined Cogitatio's Membership Program since 11th October 2018, enabling authors to publish in Cogitatio journals without having to directly incur any Article Processing Charges (APC).
Elsevier: Cell Press Journals
Under FinELib consortium’s agreement with Elsevier, corresponding authors can publish their articles open access without article processing charge (APC) in Cell Press hybrid journals eligible for the agreement. There is a limited number of free open access articles available during the agreement period 2022–2024.
You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:
- You are the corresponding author of the article who is to communicate with Elsevier through the peer review process.
- Your article has been accepted for publication in one of the Cell Press hybrid journals. NB! Alterations to the list are possible during the agreement period.
- See the list of eligible journals on FinELib's website.
- The acceptance date of your article is between Jan 1, 2022 and Dec 31, 2024.
- Your article has been peer-reviewed. Peer-review article types include
- full length journal articles
- review articles
- short communications
- case reports
- short reviews (surveys)
- original software publications

- protocols
- replication studies
- videos

Elsevier: SD Freedom Journals
Under FinELib consortium’s agreement with Elsevier, corresponding authors can publish their articles open access without article processing charge (APC) in Elsevier hybrid journals eligible for the agreement. There is a limited number of free open access articles available during the agreement period 2021–2023. The hybrid title Journal of Great Lakes Research subscribed by Open Science Centre is also included in the agreement.
You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:
- You are the corresponding author of the article.
- You are a researcher or student of JYU.
- Your article has been accepted for publication in one of the Elsevier’s hybrid journals eligible for the agreement.
- See the list of eligible journals on FinELib's website.
- The Journal of Great Lakes Research subscribed by OSC is also included in the agreement.
- The acceptance date of your article is between Jan 1, 2021 and Dec 31, 2023.
- Your article has been peer-reviewed. Peer-review article types include

Emerald
FinELib consortium’s agreement with Emerald offers authors an opportunity to publish their articles under the CC BY-license with a free open access voucher.
- No article processing charge for the author.
- The vouchers can be used during the agreement term (1.1.2021–31.12.2023).
- Corresponding authors affiliated to the University of Jyväskylä are eligible to use the free vouchers.
- The author must use his/her institutional email address when submitting the manuscript. Emerald will recognize the authors eligibility for the voucher from the institutional email domain.

IEEE
FinELib consortium’s agreement with IEEE offers authors an opportunity to publish their articles open access during the agreement term 2021 - 2023 without article processing charges (APC) in IEEE's hybrid and full OA journals. However, the author may be responsible for color, page or reprint charges. There is a limited amount of free open access articles but they are estimated to cover publications for the contract period.
You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:
- You are the corresponding author of the article who is to communicate with IEEE through the peer review process.
- You are a researcher or student of JYU.
- Your article has been accepted for publication in one of the IEEE’s hybrid or fully open access journals.

- Your article has been peer-reviewed.
- Your article has been accepted for publication during 1.1.2021–31.12.2023.

Nature Research
FinELib consortium’s agreement with Springer Nature includes open access publishing in Nature Research hybrid titles (see journals list on FinELib's website) during the agreement term 1.6.2022–31.12.2024.
The corresponding author does not need to pay an APC (article processing charge). The charges are covered by the agreement.
Corresponding authors affiliated to the University of Jyväskylä are eligible to publish open access under the agreement. Open Science Centre verifies your affiliation to Springer during the publishing process. The agreement covers open access publishing of the following article types:
- Original Paper
- Analysis
- Article
- Letter
- Brief Communication
- Registered Report
- Resource
- Technical Report

It is assumed that all corresponding authors will want to publish open access. If this is not the case with you, contact Open Science Centre before you complete the My Publication -process. They will reject verifying your affiliation in the system. You will then receive a new link to My Publication and your article will be published behind a paywall.
Open Book Publishers
Open Book Publishers is the biggest independent open access academic publisher of monographs in the UK and amongst the leaders in the English-speaking world. All members at the University of Jyväskylä have free access to the various formatted digital editions of every title of OBP. List of all OBP books.
Open Library of Humanities
Open Library of Humanities is a not-for-profit diamond open access publisher funded by membership fees from subscribing libraries. University of Jyväskylä is one of OLH’s supporters.
All authors regardless of their institutional affiliation can publish open access in OLH journals at no cost to themselves.
All articles are published under a CC BY licence. For reasons of third-party copyright and at the request of the author, a more restrictive CC licence can be applied.

Oxford University Press (OUP)
FinELib’s agreement with OUP allows authors from JYU to publish open access in OUP’s hybrid journals at no additional charge. The costs of OA publishing are covered by the agreement and paid for from Library budgets. You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:
- You are affiliated with JYU.
- Your article has been received into production in one of OUP’s hybrid titles during 1.1.2021–31.12.2023.

- You are the corresponding author of the article.
- Your article has been peer-reviewed.

Royal Society of Chemistry
Researchers can publish their articles open access in Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) hybrid journals without additional payment. Open access publishing is free for the researcher, since the costs have been covered as a part of FinELib consortium’s agreement. You are entitled to free open access publishing in RSC journals if
- Your article is being published in an RSC hybrid journal
- See the list of eligible journals on FinELib's website.
- You are the corresponding author of your article
- Your article has been accepted during 1.1.2022–31.12.2023
- You are a researcher/student/staff member in JYU
Additionally, researchers/students/staff members (as corresponding authors) of JYU are entitled to 15% discount on the APC of RSC's Full OA journals.
NB: RSC identifies eligible authors based on their email address. When submitting your article to RSC, please use the email address of your own organization.

SAGE
Negotiations on a new agreement for 2023-2024 are ongoing.
Science Advances journal (AAAS)
Researchers of JYU get a 15 % discount when publishing in Science Advances, journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).All articles in Science Advances are immediately open access. Information about Science Advances APC fees can be found on Science Advances website.You are entitled to the discount if you meet the following requirements:
- You are the paying author, which is usually the corresponding author, or the person acting on the author’s behalf using the online payment system.
- Your article has been accepted during 10.12.2021–2.12.2022.
- You are a researcher, student or staff member of JYU.

SCOAP3 is a partnership of over three thousand libraries, key funding agencies and research centers. Springer Compact
FinELib consortium’s agreement with Springer Nature includes open access publishing in Springer’s hybrid titles in the Compact collection (see journals list on FinELib's website) during the agreement term 1.1.2021–31.12.2023. The corresponding author does not need to pay an APC (article processing charge). The charges are covered by the agreement.
Corresponding authors affiliated to the University of Jyväskylä are eligible to publish open access under the agreement. Open Science Centre verifies your affiliation to Springer during the publishing process. The agreement covers open access publishing of the following article types:
- Original Paper
- Review Paper
- Brief Communication
- Continuing Education

Support for open access
University of Jyväskylä participates in the financing of organizations developing open science infrastructures through various memberships.
arXiv
arXiv is a curated open platform and open access archive maintained by Cornell University that hosts scholarly articles in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. University of Jyväskylä has pledged to fund arXiv.
Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB)
Directory of Open Access Books is a discovery service for peer-reviewed open access books and an open infrastructure committed to open science. University of Jyväskylä is one of the supporters of DOAB.
Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
DOAJ is a directory of open, peer-reviewed scientific journals. Most of DOAJ’s funding comes from academic organizations, including JYU.
DSpace
DSpace is one of the most widely adopted open-source repository software in the world for managing research and scholarly materials across all disciplines, and cultural heritage materials of all types, with a focus on open access, preservation, and storage. University of Jyväskylä has committed to fund DSpace.
Public Knowledge Project (PKP)
Public Knowledge Project is a multi-university initiative developing free open source software and conducting research to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing. JYU is one of PKP’s supporters.
SCOAP3 for Books
SCOAP3 for Books program is part of the SCOAP3 project and will convert key textbooks and monographs in particle physics and neighboring fields to open access. JYU has supported the initiative with a financial contribution.
Sherpa Romeo
Sherpa Romeo is an online resource that aggregates and analyses publisher open access policies from around the world and provides summaries of publisher copyright and open access archiving policies on a journal-by-journal basis. JYU is one of Sherpa Romeo financiers.
SPARC Europe
SPARC Europe (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) promotes and works for Open Science and Scholarship in Europe. SPARC Europe consistently initiates, facilitates, and supports the implementation of the long-term objective of opening access to European research for all. University of Jyväskylä is a SPARC Europe supporter.
